Hey, I've got a 2013 Cat 308 CR E2 on loan that's giving me trouble. It fires up and runs great at first, but after about 30 minutes it starts sputtering and cuts out. No fault codes show up anywhere. I've ruled out fuel tank vacuum issues and the fuel supply to the high pressure pump looks fine. It restarts without a problem but does the same thing again. If I wait a bit it'll run, just not for long. Any ideas what could cause this?

I'd fully disassemble the fuel/water separator—mark and disconnect both lines first, then remove the filter. Unscrew the top and lift it off, noting the perimeter O-ring. Take out the inlet fitting and clean the path from the inlet port to the filter stem, specifically the outer bore of the filter stem. Once you've reassembled and reinstalled everything, prime the fuel system by turning the key on for 2 minutes. I've seen this same issue come up in threads about skid steers and compact track loaders too, since they use the same system.
crashnbergNew Member#3 Yeah, I'm seeing good flow and pressure right where the fuel line connects to the high pressure fuel pump. No alarms are showing up at all, just the engine cutting out. I'm guessing if the rail pressure dropped too low, the sensor at the end would trigger an alarm, right? The monitor screen won't do diagnostics without the Cat EC software. I'm starting to think it could be a sensor acting up when things heat up. Would a speed sensor throw an alarm if something was wrong with it?
heymccallSenior Member#4 I've run into those exact symptoms before on mini excavators, skid steers, and compact track loaders pretty often. Since there's probably no engine shutdown protection, and it won't start again until it's been sitting for a bit, I still think the inlet supply might be the problem. Here's what I'd try: pinch off the inlet and unscrew the housing top lid. Take a look at what's inside that cavity under the cap. Is it clean, or is there debris in there?
crashnbergNew Member#5 I've tracked it down to the ECU acting up when the engine gets hot. The part number is 1J770 - 59051, a Kubota 112500 12v Denso unit. Any suggestions on fixing it?
