Thanks in advance for anyone responding I have limited big diesel experience ,20 years at Chrysler dodge jeep dealers I have a believe to be 1980 kamotsu d65 Nh 220 Cummins Bought it not running with fuel in engine oil Removed the injection pump replaced the input shaft double seal and changed the oil Got it running seem to run good always started right up didn't smoke But would lose power and seemed like fuel pressure and prime . I replace fuel filter system with newer 2 filter spin on set up with primer and fuel lines Also checked the float tank Float was broke , I might of broke it lol But figured can't have to much fuel lol Seemed to run good no smoke ect. But still losing prime Would start to die then I would pump the primer and be good for a couple minutes. I let it sit a couple day and the engine was hydro locked with fuel Also engine oil level way up the dip stick 3/4 to the top Im taking it apart now #3 has a bent valve and broken valve keepers Also the "cross head was almost off and wore really weird like there was a problem there for a while But ran to good But also can't see that wear just coming from a hydro lock I Will up load Pictures My question is what could cause fuel in the cylinders like that without it running bad Also as I was taking it apart before I pulled the injectors there was fuel in the intake port of the head on #3 and 4 Also when I pulled other injectors other cylinders had fuel in them too I am pulling the heads to check if I bent any rods Bad day Any help would be appreciated

Thank you for your response That little tank on the side float valve could cause the cylinders to fill with fuel ? Shouldn't the injections be sealed or are they not supposed to be that tight of a seal ? Up through the return line? The fuel shut off solenoid does seem to work Shuts off fairly fast Within 10 seconds There is a ball valve a at the tank I could shut it off after every use but Really not trying to go through all this ever again haha
Deere500aSenior Member#4 Injector are not seating letting fuel dribble with gravity help from the tank.
Truck ShopSuper User#5 First off, how many bent push tubes/push rods? It's not uncommon to remove a head on N series and find some raw fuel in piston compression crowns. For the fact of high oil level--before going to far, have the heads PT'd. Cracks in fuel passages is not uncommon either, which can lead to a loss of prime. There is a copper injector cup pressed into head that injector seats in, it separates cooling passage from injector. The injector is sealed by o-rings while seated in copper. The fact it has a bent valve should be seen on top of piston valve reliefs. I believe the center head is area of concern at this time.
jakepintyeNew Member#6 Atleast 1 bent push rod I believe the copper injection cup/seals were full and when I pulled the injectors the fuel went into the cylinders Except for cylinders 3 and 4 they share an intake port and that was full when I took the intake off even with the bent valve . I've never taken one of these injector out but the spring and "needle" pulls right out . Is it possible that was coming out the top were the spring is if the clearance is to much I was thinking air check the injectors under water unless there's another way . The Cracked heads/pt passages im not familiar with these engine but this nh220 743 engine has transfer tubes not really passages like I've seen on 855 The valve did kiss the piston but not the compression crown Im up loading pictures Also kinda looks like whatever was going on was happening for a while #3 cylinder the one with the bent valve Exhaust port has alot more soot any of the others Are there injector seal kits ? I have the kamotsu service manual Engine is not in it I bought a nh220 manual Pt fuel system not in it lmao Said order bulletin when I googled the bulletin nothing came up

Yes, I'm incorrect on fuel passage. But in order to pump that much fuel into pan it would have to have a supply leak. The {needle} is a plunger, both it and spring are removeable as with any non-top stop injector of early models. As far as pushing fuel past, I've never seen it, but that doesn't mean it can't either. When valve kissed piston crosshead went sideways.

I feel like if there was an internal leak like in my situation the float level would stay down and continue to allow fuel to flow Also I did notice the injector hold downs weren't very tight, especially on the problem cylinder Also once I did remove the oil fill/dip I believe while it was running and was excessive pressure in crankcase But even with the injector being loose and leaking compression into the crank case Which would also allow fuel into the cylinder I still have a good leak Im going to try and air test the injectors and transfer tubes under water and see if I come up with anything Really not trying to buy 6 injectors and a injection pump as a guess It ran really good so dont really think all that's bad I just bought it paid $6k 3000 hours, it didn't steer when I got it Wind up replacing the worn bronze steer clutch seals , couldn't find bronze one so replace with Teflon ones. Worked so far but on have an hour or 2 since I got it together Now this haha
oarwhatJunior Member#11 I had a few old cummins HR,NH etc. I willing to bet someone previously set the valves wrong. people always had a hard time with the timing markings on the dampener. I think there were 4 markings and people got them confused.
HATCHEQUIPJunior Member#12 Komatsus with float tanks would fill engines with fuel if the tanks and floats were not working correctly. It was a thang back in the day.
Pops52Junior Member#13 How “loose” were the 2 injector bolts? Are the others loose too?
Pops52Junior Member#14 The tubes feeding the injectors have copper washers on the ends that could be leaking also. With the injectors loose, a few could leak. The 2 bolts should have a spot of neoprene on the the threads to lock them. Just some thoughts thinking back to 1970…..
HATCHEQUIPJunior Member#15 Fuel tanks on a truck were lower than the fuel system on the engine, its when they got the tanks up high that they started using the floats
Truck ShopSuper User#16 By the looks of parts--that engine has been in a wash/spin cycle for some time. Which push tube was bent?
Simon CSuper User#17 Dealerships have watched their hands of those units around here. Don't get too deep into it as the parts supply will come to a dead wall at some point. Have changed head gaskets on one three years ago, and owners know it was the last time. Simon C
