Hello i have a genie manlif that im replacing the joystick and i cannot remove the old one because i cant figure out how to get the knob off. I dont see a pin and cant imagine that it screws off either. You cant put the controller /joystick through the mounting hole without removing the black knob! When you take the little phillips screws out theres just the shaft visible. see picture thanks for oyur help

kentuckynetJunior Member#1 willie59Senior Member#2 IIRC, that knob has a very small hole in the side of it. You rotate the knob around until it lines up with a very small hex set screw and using a hex key you loosen the set screw and remove the knob. Don't recall the size of the hex key.
kentuckynetJunior Member#3 i sure wish it did but it does not, put a light on it and a magnifying glass, nothing there.Has to be another way.
willie59Senior Member#4 That looks like an OEM model JS5 controller. According to the installation instructions you simply screw the knob off and remove the boot, then fit the controller through mounting hole from underside. > https://www.oemcontrols.com/js5-multi-axis-controller/
kentuckynetJunior Member#5 you were correct, now that its installed can i assume it wont work until its calibrated? i installed it and didnt calibrate it and thought i would see if it would work but it didnt. the directions to calibrate it are quite lengthy.
willie59Senior Member#6 Does that machine have the ALC-500 circuit board in the platform control box?
kentuckynetJunior Member#7 how would i know?
kentuckynetJunior Member#8 heres some photos that may help you help me,
kentuckynetJunior Member#9 you can see the new joystick install

kentuckynetJunior Member#11 i replied how would i know , so i just took a picture hoping that would help?
willie59Senior Member#12 Got it. The circuit board pictured is called a "horsepower limiter board", it only controls drive function. For the other joysticks you adjust the trim pots soldered on the circuit board for that joystick. And yes, they can be tricky to adjust.
kentuckynetJunior Member#13 im guessing until they are adjusted my new joysticjk wont function? because it doesnt do anything right now
willie59Senior Member#14 New controllers are typically close enough to cause movement, but I have seen that happen before. Anyway, adjusting them is fairly easy, just follow the instructions from the Genie manual, it walks you through the process. The threshold is how soon movement happens as you move the joystick from center null. Hi and Low are adjusted by voltage, the manual gives you the values. And it mentions setting a timer to time cycling, I never bother with that. But lastly you need to set the ramp rate. Ramp is how fast movement stops when you have a function engaged, such as swing, and you simply let go of the joystick and allow it to pop back to null. If it stops abruptly and slams you around, increase the ramp rate. Proper ramp rate will allow the function come to a gradual stop when you let go of a joystick.
kentuckynetJunior Member#15 thank you for trying to help me, guess im worried the new controller is bad or ssomething since it didnt make it move in any direction. Hope i can figure out those directions!!! I have them but they are black and white and kinda like a drawing so im not sure where i take all these readings?
kentuckynetJunior Member#16 can you help me locate this that i circled in red? im sure its in one of my pictures above.
willie59Senior Member#17 It's right there in your post #9 above. That's the circuit boards that the joysticks are connected to. With the lid open and you standing in the platform, the dual axis joystick to the far left is swing and primary boom. The joystick in the middle is secondary boom, that leaves the drive stick to the far right (not shown in pic above). The diagram from the manual that you posted shows you what the terminals are on the circuit boards, and it shows you the trim pots you adjust for threshold, low, high, and ramp. Just follow those directions and you'll be fine. But the first thing you need to do is connect the positive lead of a voltmeter to terminal G and the negative lead of the meter to terminal F of the circuit boards. Turn on power but don't start engine. Step on the foot switch and see if it shows nominal 12V on your meter. Terminal G is 12V+ supply and terminal F is ground (earth) for the circuit boards. Make sure you have that.
willie59Senior Member#18 BTW, you'll notice that dual axis joystick has two circuit boards. The one on the left of that joystick controls swing, the one on the right controls primary boom.
kentuckynetJunior Member#19 are these the trim pots? this is the old joystick......they dont look like they would adjust, its like thay have glue on them or something?
Mr. WrenchSenior Member#20 Yes those are the trim pots that have the green stuff on them. You just have to carefully remove the glue/sealer to adjust them. They usually take a small flat screwdriver.
