Have an older but decent goose with oak deck. Trying to extend the life. Is there any magic sauce for this or just reach for any backyard deck product? Anything is better than nothing sort of thing? I don't intend to lift until I have a pool of slobbers under the trailer. Maybe triple coat. Not sure how much that oak will drink but probably nothing like softwood.
What to treat wood decking with?

HarleyHappySuper User#3 Still using linseed oil, used oil does penetrate better than anything else though.
fastlineSenior Member#4 I've never reached for used oil. Only have diesel oil right now and man, I would not want to smell that from 10 blocks away every day. Have to see if I can find a different solution. Maybe some questionable new, or even buy some new cheap oil.
CoaldustSuper User#5 Used engine oil works well, but if you want to purchase a product, Chevron Shingle Oil is a great choice. Very popular with the log home crowd.
HarleyHappySuper User#6 Believe it or not, new oil will not soak into wood like used oil. Burn oil just penetrates.
CoaldustSuper User#7 My Father built a pole barn, with Douglas fir poles, treated with engine oil, 50 years ago in the PNW, and it’s still standing. The plywood is probably the only thing keeping it upright, but used crankcase oil is an amazing wood preservative.
cfherrmanSenior Member#8 Cut used with diesel, I've used dies it doesn't smell after a few days I don't think used oil will either

When I want used motor oil to preserve wood, it's the darkest, blackest, used diesel oil that I like. Light weight, synthetic oil from the new cars doesn't do a thing, won't soak in good and probably doesn't do much preserving. Used hydraulic oil, atf, etc is ok, as long as it's well mixed with some nasty old black motor oil. Cut the used oil with diesel to the desired consistency and paint on.

Doesn't have enough contaminates, fresh oil will not atomize and burn in a waste oil furnace. Plus fresh oil is five times harder to clean up when spilled. * Nasty used oil--go to a Penske shop. They run extremely high extended oil change intervals, in the neighborhood of 70,000 miles on class eight trucks. It's why it's never a good idea to consider buying one.
HarleyHappySuper User#11 While you and I may understand that. When your boss is telling you to oil the chains in the sawmill and you tell him it’s time to change the oil in the trucks because your out of burn oil. Then he buys you a whole case of chain and sprocket lube and you tell him it works like **** and you need the used oil. He just looks at you sideways, like he doesn’t believe you. Or your treating the deck on a flatbed and the same thing, I don’t want crappy used oil on the deck and he gets cheap new motor oil and it just globs on the deck and won’t soak into the wood. Lol
