The final drive on my John Deere 290 GLC excavator has gone south. A new one from John Deere is $38,000.00, and a rebuild is estimated, sight unseen, at $20,00.00. Sure is a lot of money at Christmastime. Also, need a mechanic who can remove the old drive and install the new one. The machine is in the river bottom in Liberty, Tx. Will greatly appreciate any help. Thanks

It depends on what is wrong. Post up a serial number and there are a few guys who work on them here that may offer some good advice. when you say in the river bottom, is it getting underwater?

David. Have you tried Texas Final Drive? 1-877-330-7477. Looks like they are on the other side of Houston from you.

Maybe check into Brikers (located in Maple Ridge, Just east of Vancouver, BC) They have dismantled machines. Don't know much about them except I purchased a used radiator for our Hitachi EX 270 about 12 years ago. $38,000 is just absurd, sorry for your problem! Your American dollar will go a long ways here in Canada....

On a high-dollar final drive like that I would get the identification work nailed down before choosing new, rebuilt, reman, or used. The file I would want before ordering is the machine serial, final-drive tag if readable, photos of the motor/gearbox, bolt pattern, sprocket interface, hose/port layout, case drain routing, and whether the failure put metal into the gearbox oil or hydraulic return. If the machine sat in water or mud, I would also want the oil drained into a clean pan and photographed so you know whether you are dealing with normal failure, contamination, or a bigger cleanup problem. For a replacement quote, make the supplier state whether the unit is OEM, reman, aftermarket, used, or rebuilt from your core, what is included, what must be reused, and what voids the warranty. Also confirm freight weight, crate method, core return terms, and who pays labor if the unit is wrong. A cheaper drive is not cheaper if the ports, sprocket side, brake release, or travel-speed line does not match when the mechanic is already on site.
