The gear driving the scavenger pump looks like it's sitting pretty tight against the case when I've got it on the bench. The measurement from case to gear center checks out fine, same with the distance between the two gear centers. But there's play when I lift up on it that moves it away from the case. Am I overlooking something here?

It's been a while since I worked on one, but from what I remember, that setup looks right. What made you take it out in the first place?

That's normal—it's got a tapered bearing that'll center itself once you fill it with oil.

Pulled what looked like a piece of seal ring out of the converter screen. Just went through the bearings, seal housings, seals, and pumps. It's been a while since I've torn one of these apart, and I don't recall the gear being that close to the case.

You've got to keep in mind that the case is heavier on the side where the scavenge pump hole is, so it pulls that way when it's sitting on the pot.
