Running 637s as single engines

I'm looking to run 637s E series 2 and 637D scrapers, both 1fb and 27w models, as single engine units but with the option to also operate them push pull with twin engines. Can I just pull the axles and get going, or is there something else I need to do? Also, curious who's running the most scrapers up in Alaska. Thanks.

Way back when, people would take off the back packs from twin engine Cat scrapers pretty regularly for stuff like downhill pit heap reclamation work. You'll want to pull the planetaries though to cut down on drag.

Out here in California, we'd regularly pull the rear engines off 637s, 657s, and even 666s and run them as single-engine machines in their second life. I'm not sure exactly how much weight they removed, but the owners typically wouldn't bother putting dished hubs on the scraper axles. The rear plantares were the dead giveaway.
