Deutz F3L 1011F engine issues

Hi, I have a 2002 Genie Z45-25 lift with a deutz F3L 1011 F engine. The problem is that the engine starts up fine and runs at full rpm for a short period (like 8-10 minutes) then the engine starts knocking and puffing out lots of grey smoke. It seems to want to run away. I had the injectors checked at a reputable shop and they indicated one was overfueling and had a bad tip. I purchased/installed new injectors and the problem is the same. I removed the air cleaner, checked the timing belt for problems (there were none) I the ran the unit to see if loosening a fuel line when it started knocking would indicate a bad fuel pump and if so which one. This did not work. I noticed oil beginning to drip out of the intake rubber hose from the air cleaner. The engine oil level appears to be over the mark and looks like it might be contaminated by fuel but does not smell of diesel. After 20 mins or so of cooling the engine starts/runs fine for the same amount of time and will do the same thing. I believe that there could be a bad head gasket. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Welcome to HEF Batdevice ! Try loosening the fuel cap when it happens to see if the issue goes away.

Great. Thanks for the info. This website is a joke.

If you suspect a failed head gasket you could try testing the cooling system with a pressurizing pump to see if it holds. Any loss of pressure indicates a leak somewhere in the system. EDIT: My bad. Completely slipped my mind it was air-cooled......

Hello my friend. You have stumbled upon a website full of the most knowledgeable mechanics I’ve ever come across. Unfortunately we are copping a bit of a spam attack at the moment. This may of had an impact on the response to your questions. when oil cooled deutz blow a head gasket you will know. There will be oil running out the exhaust. I have also run across valve stem seals leaking having similar issues.

A blocked fuel tank breather, as suggested above, or a restriction in fuel is probably a more likely cause. This will cause a miss fire, low pressure in cylinders and will draw oil in through any means possible. (Rings, valve stem seals or head gasket.

I must admit that my first thought when I first read the OP was fuel starvation, at least to eliminate it from the mix before moving on.

IF HE HAD A INJECTOR OVERFUELING AND REPLACED IT WITHOUT DRAINING THE OIL/DIESEL MIXTURE AND REFILLING TO CORRECT LEVEL WITH GOOD OIL IT WILL KEEP TRYING TO RUN OFF THE SUMP OIL WHEN IT GETS HOT ENOUGH TO EXPAND INTO RUNAWAY TERRITORY LOL JUST MY THOUGHTS..DEFINITELY COULD HAVE GOT MORE HELP WITHOUT THE "JOKE" COMMENT

For the benefit of people reading this thread in the future, the F3L 1011 is actually an oil cooled engine. The engine oil is circulated as coolant. Yes, a leaking head gasket is very common and will make huge amounts of smoke in the exhaust and even cause a run-away of sorts. (they will run on the engine oil after shutting off the fuel supply) And BTW, in my opinion this website is more precious than gold. No joke.
