And why would they use stinking brake fluid on a forklift? Just adds more problems, especially if they end up just sitting for long periods. What sort of rubber is used in the systems, and would new parts be compatable with AW-32 hydraulic oil? As hydraulic oil will not accumulate water nor leak and cause rusted or corroded wheel cylinders. Heat and fluids? Hydraulic oil lives all day long on many machines at close to 200F so ???
Forklifts and brakes

chidogSenior Member#1 CoaldustSuper User#2 Chidog, We just had this discussion. But, we can talk about it some more. Forklifts are always fun. https://www.heavyequipmentforums.com/threads/fork-lift-brake-fluid.122547/
DDougSuper User#3 What is this concept you speak of ? Forklifts with "Brakes" ??? Never seen one.
CoaldustSuper User#4 That’s the truth .
DDougSuper User#5 That's what the stabbie things on front are for.....
willie59Senior Member#6 What kind of forklift are we talking about anyway? And no, any system that uses DOT3 fluid can not use any form of hydraulic fluid as a replacement, and vice versa. The rubber components are for those specific fluids.
TD24Junior Member#7 I am old school and old (90) but it was always simple to me and us in the day. Use DOT3 brake fluid in brakes and AW30 hydraulic oil in the hydraulics. 1 can, 1 five gal can, easily ID'ed and kept separate.... Tho I have made some good money on slack weekends; kitting a pallet jack that someone added "A little bake fluid" just to bring it up.....
Deere500aSenior Member#8 Others have posted plus Hydraulic oil in the brakes will hold heat & expand lock the wheels up
chidogSenior Member#9 Other topics? Oh well us old guys can't remember that far back. The way I use a fork lift the brake fluid will never get hot unless its the engine heating it.
Deere500aSenior Member#10 Friction heat oil warms starts expanding increasing shoe drag. Had a car duel master cylinder the rear circuit was topped off with atf could feel it dragging & smell'em easy flush fix.
MrwizardNew Member#11 Dot3 is 400f Dot 4 is 460f you can use either one. The water wicking is why most forklifts dont have brakes. All brake seals are only compatable with brake fluid. Mixing any other oils, results in seals that turn to mush.

My research shows there are choices that were found with the seal types for the master cylinder, some for what it says as BF and HO, that means Brake Fluid, and Hydraulic Oil. I'm gona be looking for the HO seals if possible. Never will this thing under my care need brake fluid, the next person would likely just scrap it. So how would the brake fluid seals react to say canola oil, sure better than using that crap in your food. Anything other than brake fluid. What about antifreeze since its similar but has inhibitors?
MrwizardNew Member#13 Yea, If you're replacing the seals, and replacements spec out for BF or HO (lets just call it oil) you can do either. Oil just doesn't have the temp ratings, but, if something is going to mainly sit like most forklifts oil would be better I guess.

MrwizardNew Member#15 I would rather you use soybean oil, it would benefit my son in law. Not something I would do. But if youve got the time to experiment, why not?

chidogSenior Member#17 Canola ? Ha ha ha, the wife saw a study of how it increases estrogen in men, Hmmmm yeah, and years ago the study I found explain how it produces a polymer of sorts that can restrict blood veins in eyes. Canola is genetically modified Rape seed, and can be toxic stuff. It is the worse food oil ever. Just do the study. The normal twist around, what they say is good is bad and what they say is bad is good. Like olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil are the true healthy oils, oh and animal fat, canola is a great bio fuel meaning a good food for a diesel engine to eat. Oh and how do I know other than the crap taste when I go out doors after having something with canola oil? I get massive acid reflux, and same with my brother. Yeah they can tariff that oil 1000000% keep it there.
CoaldustSuper User#18 Absolutely. One of the biggest food scams ever foisted upon us. An industrial product, Canadian oil Low Acid turned into foodstuff. What a scam. Especially, when there are so many other options.
