Our Dropbox is bad in our truck if I get a reman how hard are they to change? I'm headed to look at the truck right now. Our dealer was out the other day and pulled the plug and it had shaving all over in the oil. Are most of the reman sellers fairly good options? Reman from Volvo is $13k higher then rebuilt from aftermarket company.

Reman from Volvo will incorporate all the updates and improvements. The unit rebuilds may not have the parts or information to perform these upgrades. Also , reman from Volvo will come with a warranty, provided the dealer tech installs and you change the cooler. There is also a software update that helps reduce the likelihood of dropbox failure. It basically rewrites when the longitudinal diff lock comes in and out. Helps to keep the dog clutches from setting up. Hope this helps with your decision.

Thanks for the reply. Do you know how many hours it takes to swap them out? Our truck had an updated Dropbox from what it came from the factory so probably wouldn't know if it had the updates or not?

A fella that's been down that road once and has all the tooling, could probably bang it out in 16-24 hours, humpin'. If its yer first rodeo, 36-40 . There's a huge learning curve and a few pitfalls to avoid. Not a challenge to undertake without a service manual.

All that tooling would be needed to swap the one that's in there with a reman?

It's not so much tooling as rigging and cribbing and knowing what you're doing. Where to put the ratchet block, how high to crib your lift point. Where all the little doo-dads are that are going to get broken both coming out and going in. Last I heard FL1002 was latest incarnation with all the updates . You need tech tool to check software levels.

Anyone have a step by step for rebuilding a Volvo A35D drop box

  8. funwithfuelSenior Member#8

Do you have a rebuildable core? Usually the inter-axle differential blows the case apart.

Post the model number should be FLxxxx or something like that.

Try calling Centrans in Missouri. https://centranz.com/ Right on the landing page about halfway down they show keeping stock on the drop box for your Volvo. I have spoken to them multiple times to get help on some of our older B model Bell trucks with ZF transmissions before we retired them. We nice people willing to help work through problems if they can. They seem to specialize in Volvo more so than anything else. They should have what you need.

They did the same for me with an old ZF transmission. I could not find a manual online but they had one available and shared it with me so I could work through troubleshooting the problem.

Click to expand... Thanks For the reply - just getting back to our drop box problem. I did find a rebuild manual for our FL 992 in New York. Its a Volvo publication which covers FL992, FL1002 drop boxes. Having built the engine stand from Hell to facilitate tear down and rebuild operation. Our problem looks to be the only ball bearing - bearing in the entire drop box exploded on the clutch sleeve. Our case looks good and we are going to do the necessary repairs in -house.
